Harleysville and the surrounding areas began to grow sometime around 1853 when a north and south section of railroad was built. With the railroad came a stop in the neighboring town of Souderton and years later Harleysville, only a few miles away began to grow. In 1909 Harleysville Bank was founded then a few years later in 1915 Harleysville Insurance began. Both businesses are still alive and well today. For many, Harleysville would still be thought of as a rural location but to those of us that have grown up in the region we have witnessed tremendous change. As little as 30 years ago Harleysville was mostly farmland "sprinkled" with a few small village style town centers. Since then the urban sprawl has made its way up the Pennsylvania turnpikes North-East Extension to the Lansdale interchange which is only approximately one mile from Harleysville. Today, growth which was originally started by residential development has led to many business opportunities within the community. While there is plenty of big business alive in Harleysville including many banking institutions, grocery stores, Insurance companies and Wal-mart, there are still many "mom and pop" establishments like pizza shops, restaurants, as well as many other small businesses. A few additional Harleysville highlights include the Lederach Golf Course, a community fair and parade every Memorial day weekend sponsored by the Harleysville Jaycees, as well as many other small festivals such as the Apple butter Frolic. |
